Description

Discovered in 1764 by Charles Messier, the Dumbbell Nebula is a relatively bright planetary nebula at a distance of ~1,300 light years.  The red and green hues are attributable to ionized hydrogen and oxygen, respectively.  This image is a composite of both narrow band and broadband RGB sub exposures.
